Going into the 2023 season, Sporting Kansas City’s biggest question mark has been their lack of quality at the center back position. Last season was a disappointment missing the playoffs, but after the addition of midseason transfers Willy Agada and Erik Thommy Sporting Kansas City finished off the 2022 campaign strong, going 6-2-2 in their final ten games. Offseason pick-up defensive midfielder Nemanja Radoja from La Liga side RC Celta de Vigo as well as the expected return of Gadi Kinda, Kortne Ford, and Alan Pulido had many Kansas City fans expectations high for 2023. However, center back Kortne Ford picked up a season ending achilles injury in the preseason and Sporting Kansas City declined center back Nicolas Isimat-Mirin’s contract for 2023. This left Sporting Kansas City incredibly thin in the back with underperformer Robert Voloder and past his prime Andreu Fontas looking to be the starting duo at CB in Sporting’s 4-3-3 System. SKC did partially fill this hole by adding second round draft pick Chris Rindov and USL/Finnish League player Robert Castellanos, but neither have shown starting MLS quality as of yet in their career.
In the last few days Sporting Kansas City has been tied to Colombian center back Dany Rosero. Rosero currently is on the roster for Colombian side Atlético Junior and has made 113 appearances in Colombia’s Categoria Primeira A since 2017. Atlético Junior is a top team in Colombia and has won the cup as recently as 2019 When Danny was on Deportivo Cali). Danny is 6 ft 2 in tall and is 29 years old. In 2022 Rosero made 48 starts throughout all competitions for Atlético Junior accumulating 13 yellow cards and 1 goal. Transfermarkt has his value at €900k. In 2022 Dany was involved in a controversy where he appeared to be intoxicated while he was wearing his club’s jersey. Despite this, his coach defended him and the controversy seemed minor.
Peter Vermes while appearing on Soren Petro’s Radio Show “The Program” made it clear that talks are in progress with multiple center backs and that the team is looking to sign one sooner rather than later. Rumors started yesterday that Dany Rosero was signing with an unnamed MLS team and was finishing up the paperwork. On Twitter, Sporting Kansas City was the team linked to the deal. Since then, Rosero has followed Sporting Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes on Instagram. This would be a much-needed signing for SKC if it comes to fruition.
