New England Revolution: A Letter from Fort Dedham

Dear Josh,

Life in Fort Dedham continues to be good this summer. The gardens are bearing fruit, and while we are having stretches of intense heat, unpredictable summer storms break up the oppression enough that we are able to bear it. The little ones are good, and we actually bought a new carriage the other day. Carriages are still dear, with the trade routes and cost of nails keeping prices high, but ours was getting old to the point of rust and one must do what one must.

But Josh, I know you want to hear about the local militia, and to be frank they’re having a hard time of it on this campaign. There has been so much injury and hardship that one starts to think about General Washington and his long winter in Valley Forge. It is hard to think of, much less list all of this loss, but I will do my best.

While Sergeant Bye seems to have recovered fully from his grievous knee injury, his comrade Borrero has been less fortunate. While we were energized to see the amazing work by Lieutenant Chancalay in what would be his first full season, he has unfortunately fallen prey to a season-ending injury. Private Bajraktarevic has had to be treated for an ankle injury and Vrioni for a calf injury, and Captain Gil, while doing his best to keep the invaders at bay – and occasionally doing it singlehandedly – has been out recently with a lower leg injury. To see his brother Nacho and him both sidelined is difficult.

There have been bright spots, to be sure. When we played the South Floridians, Corporal Chancalay scored almost immediately and the Fort went crazy. The following ninety minutes, however, totaled up a 4-1 loss. Similar experiences were had when the crew from Ohio was here, as well as Ben Franklin’s squad.

While we everyday citizens aren’t privy to the troops’ movements and strategy, difficult news recently arrived. Sgt. Kessler, the one who hurled cannonballs at Ben Franklin’s supporters (the young folk like to say “yeet”) has been sent to St. Louis. His energy and passion on the pitch will be missed. And sadly, another good friend of Fort Dedham, Sgt. Jones, is now in Ohio. Even little Christopher couldn’t believe it, and I had to check my scroller for a few minutes to see if I understood it properly! Dejuan’s good nature, passion for the team, and reliable service into the box will be missed. The papers say he’s already hit at least one bulls-eye for the crew in Ohio, and I for one am happy for him.

At least new reinforcements are here, and more on the way. Col. Sands is here from Ohio, and he shows great promise. Lieutenant Parker arrived from St. Louis – he has a strong reputation for both morale building and success guarding the area around the posts. An Argentinian, as in Patagonia, named Luca Langoni who has a very good reputation for serving up volleys into the box, is on the way. And if all goes well, Alhassan Yusuf, a Nigerian who recently served in Belgium (near where our ancestors lived for a little while in the Lowlands) will help lock down the midfield for us in the Fort. It is heartening to know help is coming from all different places - it will only make the squad stronger!

In recent weeks there have been some friendly skirmishes that offered some hope. A Mexican squad was sent away winless, as were the settlers from Tennessee (where Sgt. Romney was previously stationed). Sgt. McNamara is back in action, and Staff Sgt. Farrell is filling in almost everywhere. Young Private Panayotou was particularly impressive in this stretch, and veteran General Wood continues to show a nose for the goal, his experience valuable to all around him. Unfortunately, a follow up meeting with a regiment from New Amsterdam didn’t go as well. At the end it came down to target practice, and the Foxborough squad couldn’t come out on top.

All in all, we are here to support our local troops, even as murmurs circulate among the populace about the possible reassignment of the Admiral. It’s hard to know, from Fort Dedham, where the truth lies, as we are on the outside looking in. All I know for sure is that the members of the New England Revolution are doing their best to move forward. And that is all we can ask. With this important but relatively short time of rest, hopefully we will see everyone in their boots ready to go.

I hope your time in California continues to be fruitful. There are rumors that there could be gold in the soil…have you found any?

Sincerely,

Matt

Re: Revs on Both Coasts Update

Hey Matt,

Are you OK? Maybe I’ll call you this weekend and we can check in. Should I be worried?

Josh
