Match Preview

Red Bulls

The New York Red Bulls will be looking for their first win of the season after playing two consecutive 1-1 draws including on the road at Minnesota last time out. Red Bull fans will be looking for increased offensive production as they’ve only managed to score twice through their first three games of the season. The Red Bulls are one of the most defensively sound teams in the league with a top 5 lowest expected goals against, shots on target attempted and total saves. The Red Bulls will be desperate for a win as they are one of 6 teams in MLS history to concede 2 goals or fewer through three games without at least one win.

Since the 2021 season the Red Bulls and Columbus have faced off five times and each match has been tightly contested. In that time frame the Red Bulls have gone 2-1-2 against Columbus with a result changing goal occurring in their last four meetings after the 87th minute. The last home meeting between the two sides ended 1-1, with Tom Barlow thinking he secured the winner in the 84th minute until Darlington Nagbe stole a point scoring 5 minutes into added time.

Columbus Crew

The Crew have had an average start to the 2023 season so far, winning once, drawing once, and losing once. Last time out Columbus managed a 1-1 draw in Toronto to avoid defeat for the 10th time in their last 13 road appearances dating back to the summer of 2022. Last weekend's draw was the 9th consecutive match that the Crew failed to win away from their home pitch. In addition to that star forward and DP Cucho Hernandez is looking for his first goal of the season for the Crew. While teaming up well with fellow DP Lucas Zelarayan in the 2-0 win over DC United earlier in the season, Hernandez will be eager to avoid going 4 consecutive matches without scoring a goal.

New York Red Bulls vs Columbus Crew Prediction

After a disappointing draw the last time Columbus came to visit as well as a slow start to the 2023 season, The Red Bulls will be eager to ensure a victory on Saturday. Despite the draw, the Red Bulls moved the ball well and created dangerous opportunities in their match against Minnesota last weekend. After spending the first few games of the season monitoring new signing Dante Vanzeir’s fitness levels, he should see increased game time leading to a more well rounded offense and hopefully a couple goals. However, expect the deadly duo of Cucho Hernandez and Lucas Zelarayan to make things difficult on the other end of the pitch.
