CITY Reads - February 17th Edition

Updated: Feb 20, 2023

We’ve made it to Friday - the final Friday not immediately followed by St. Louis CITY action! This season I’ll bring you my Friday reads - pieces from other writers and sources in the CITY universe with perspectives I find interesting.

Our Players

Let’s kick it off with one from the Post-Dispatch, penned by Benjamin Hochman. This quick profile of CITY goalkeeper Roman Burki’s journey to the MLS is an interesting one if you’re trying to get up to speed with the roster. Burki is a centerpiece of the squad who carries an incredible amount of experience, and is prepared to embrace the challenge put in front of him.

Our Owners

Alex Silverman brings us a profile of the Taylor family in the Sports Business Journal. Owners of St. Louis CITY SC, their sense of responsibility and optimism about how CITY can catalyze an economic renewal and cultural renaissance in the entire St. Louis region has already won over a massive number of supporters before the first ball has ever been kicked.

Our Supporters

STL Mag gets in on the CITY hype by profiling Jimmy Blood, a trailblazer and icon among the St. Louis soccer supporter community. From a transformative trip to Dortmund’s famous Yellow Wall, Jimmy Big Flags was inspired to create designs and flags that are now ubiquitous with St. Louis soccer. Matt Miller composes a great profile of Jimmy as he eagerly awaits the opportunity to bring his flavor to St. Louis CITY SC for the first time as an MLS competitor.

Our…Other Supporters

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has its second entry on this list, courtesy of Valerie Schremp Hahn, with insight into CITY’s fuzziest initiative - your dog can now get a ticket for a St. Louis CITY SC match. The Purina logo on the front of the CITY kit may be a dead giveaway that this is a publicity stunt, but you have to admit that at the very least, it’s an interesting twist on the fan experience.

Our Opposition

A straightforward rundown of our 3-3 draw with New York City FC at the Coachella Invitational, complete with a solid video recap. As an expansion side, I’m doing what I can to see how we’re perceived by other teams and fanbases, both on and off the field.

Our Kit

A post-publish addition - CITY unveiled our away strip (officially dubbed the Spirit Kit), and it's a beauty. Check it out for yourself.

Have a great weekend, and I'll see you next week with a profile on the three pillars of St. Louis CITY SC as we prepare for Matchweek 1.
